Frequently asked questions

Why do soft bristles work?

Soft bristles have the clear advantage that they can individually embrace each tooth and clean it thoroughly. This allows them to reach areas that a hard toothbrush with rigid bristles can neither reach nor clean. In addition, our soft Curen® bristles are rounded at the top, protect the sensitive gums and do not scratch the enamel. With a soft toothbrush, there is no risk of damage or injury when brushing.

Electric vs. manual toothbrush?

If you wonder whether a manual or an electric toothbrush is better: both are effective and allow a thorough clean when used properly. If you use an ultra-soft manual toothbrush correctly and combine it with interdentals, its cleaning efficacy is on a par with an electric model. However, electric toothbrushes are a good option for people with brackets, implants, or sensitive teeth and periodontitis. They offer a lot of comfort by eliminating the need for manual brushing and being gentle on both your teeth and gums—but they are not the time-savers some people hope for. It is still crucial to brush your teeth for a certain amount of time. Ideally, two to three minutes.

Manual vs. electric toothbrush?

Which toothbrush is better? With the proper handling and technique, both a manual and an electric toothbrush can effectively clean teeth. It is your personal preference, then. With an electric toothbrush less physical effort is required, a good thing—especially for those with limited dexterity, braces, or specific dental conditions as it comes equipped with a motor that provide powerful brushing. Manual toothbrushes on the other hand, are a classic choice, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and bristle types so that they accommodate varied demands.

How often and how long do I need to brush my teeth?

It is recommended to brush your teeth twice a day using a toothbrush with soft bristles and a gentle fluoride toothpaste. Remember to use also interdental brushes once a day—preferable before going to bed—to clean the gaps between your teeth. However, define the frequency and timing of interdental cleaning in accordance with your dental professional, adapted to your oral situation and individual needs. As for the recommended brushing time of at least two minutes each time: it is highly individual and certainly should not be limited to a fixed 2-minute rule. Please keep in mind that what matters most is that every surface of each tooth is thoroughly clean, which can take you longer than two minutes. So, you better focus on quality, not just on time.

Can a manual toothbrush clean between teeth?

Our short answer is: no. The surfaces of our teeth can be cleaned relatively easily and thoroughly with a soft, dense manual toothbrush. No matter which manual toothbrush you use, you can only clean 70% of your teeth's surfaces. For the rest—between your teeth— you'll need more specialised tools. That’s why we developed our fantastic interdental brushes with various sizes and colours for gaps with different dimensions. There’s perfect brush for every gap. If you have never used interdentals before, ask your dentist or dental hygienist. You can also get good advice at your local pharmacy.

How often to change manual toothbrush?

Replace your manual toothbrush every three to four months, even sooner if the bristles look worn or frayed. Regular replacing ensures the toothbrush remains effective at removing plaque and prevents the buildup of bacteria. Frayed bristles become less effective at cleaning teeth and removing plaque. Also replace your brush after recovering from a cold or flu, as bacteria can linger on the bristles and accumulate, especially in the moist environment of a bathroom. This may lead to reinfection or other oral health issues.

Which Curaprox toothbrush suits me best?

The best Curaprox toothbrush for you depends on your personal needs and the brushing sensation you prefer. The CS 5460 ultra soft is our most popular everyday toothbrush and offers the perfect balance between gentleness and thorough cleaning. If you have especially sensitive gums, the CS 12460 Velvet provides an even softer brushing sensation. For braces or specific oral care needs, toothbrushes such as the CS ortho can be the ideal choice. All Curaprox toothbrushes provide a gentle and thorough clean while remaining exceptionally soft on gums.

Good to know

Hard bristles clean better – think again

We spend a lot of time brushing out teeth over our lifetime. Therefore, choosing the right kind of bristles is crucial. Many people opt for soft bristles. But–wouldn’t a hard toothbrush with rigid bristles scrape away plaque better?

Well, technically, yes, a toothbrush with hard bristles scrapes away more plaque. But most hard brushes have loosely arranged, stiff bristles that leave a lot of plaque and bacteria, and they require more pressure. Too much pressure with bristles that are too stiff can have unpleasant effects on your oral health. As your toothbrush is your partner in maintaining optimal oral health, it is truly important to choose what’s best for protecting your teeth and gums. The right brush can mean the difference between a bright, healthy smile and dental discomfort.

Undesirable consequences
A hard brush can irritate your delicate oral tissue and increase your risk of gum disease like shrinking, inflamed, or bleeding gums, exposed tooth necks, and pain. It also wears away on your tooth enamel, exposes the sensitive nerves in your tooth necks, and increases the risk of cavities and cause tooth sensitivity.

Pick a soft toothbrush
Soft bristles, however, have a dense, effective cleaning surface. They can actually remove plaque even more thoroughly, because they are more flexible, can bend and embrace your teeth. This helps them reach parts of your tooth that a hard-bristled brush might miss. In addition, the bristles of our gentle toothbrushes are rounded at the top–damage or irritation are practically impossible. That’s why our toothbrushes are considered the best choice in case of gum diseases.

How to brush your teeth?

Brushing your teeth is important. Many dental problems are caused by brushing the wrong way. Correcting this habit can be a true gamechanger.

Here’s how to brush your teeth properly.

1. Hold your brush like a pen. This might feel unusual but is very effective as it makes sure you don’t apply too much pressure. Thanks to the octagonal Curaprox handle, this will come naturally.

2. Place the small toothbrush head: one half of the gentle filaments cover the teeth, the other half the gums. Tilt the brush at a 45-degree angle towards the gumline aka sulcus. Why a 45° angle? Because bacteria and plaque like to nest in the gumline. In order to get rid of them, incline the brush head towards the sulcus.

3. Move in small, gentle circles, applying minimal pressure. Usually, people start brushing the front and very often overlook the tongue-side of their teeth and the back molars. Get into this new habit and always start with the most difficult places: the back of the mouth. Move from tooth to tooth along the tongue side of your teeth. Then, continue with the outside surfaces. Thirdly, finish with the chewing surfaces. The same pattern applies to both lower and upper jaw.

P.S. How do you know if your teeth are really clean? Just lick your teeth. They should feel as smooth as glass. If some teeth still feel rough or furry, start over.

Teeth whitening in focus

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. If you’re unhappy about the current colour of your teeth, take note.

Reverse years of staining and feel more confident with whiter, brighter, and fresher-looking teeth—with our toothbrushes and toothpastes.

Natural superpower
Conventional bleaching or whitening stresses the teeth. Our approach is more natural—we use activated charcoal or carbon and certain enzymes. And we don’t bleach–we whiten. It’s a safe way that doesn’t harm your teeth or oral health.

Bristles coated with carbon
Did you know that you can brush your teeth and whiten them at the same time? The bristles of our whitening manual toothbrush Black is white are coated with carbon. Ideally, the brush should be used with our pitch-black toothpaste Black is white or the bright and zesty Be you, both without any harsh or even harmful chemicals. Don’t like manual toothbrushes? Well, get a Black is white-Hydrosonic and let its ultra soft brush head with carbon-coated bristles do all the work.
