Fluoride isn’t safe for kids – let’s clear that up
Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in water, soil, and air. But is it also safe to use it in children’s toothpaste?
Fluoride is added to toothpaste because it is scientifically proven that it can help prevent caries, strengthen weakened tooth enamel and slow its loss of minerals, limit the growth of oral bacteria, and even reverse early tooth decay.
Fluoride is safe, but …
Kids toothpaste with fluoride is generally safe and recommended for both children and adults. But it’s important to use it correctly, especially for babies and young children. If your baby or toddler swallows a small amount of toothpaste, it’s okay. As long as you’re using the recommended amount of toothpaste, swallowing a little bit shouldn’t cause any problems.
The recommended amount of fluoride in toothpaste for children:
- First tooth up to 2 years of age: 1.000ppm – a rice-grain sized amount of toothpaste
- 2–6 years: 1.000ppm and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste
- 6 years and older: 1.450ppm and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste
Our kids toothpastes contain different levels of fluoride to meet the needs of different age groups. They also come in various flavours and with carefully chosen ingredients for healthy development of the milk and first adult teeth.
Kids' fluoride free toothpaste
Fluoride is a key element in remineralising the enamel and strengthening your child’s teeth. The only time you’d need a fluoride-free toothpaste is if your doctor specifically recommends it based on your child’s individual needs. If you’re worried about the safety of fluoride, however, we also have a fluoride-free option with strawberry flavour. Just make sure to pair it with a consistent brushing schedule and regular dental visits to stay on top of cavities and decay.
How much toothpaste should my child really use?
It is common to use more toothpaste on the toothbrush than what is needed.
You don't need a lot of toothpaste for it to be effective. Babies only need a very small smear of toothpaste—no more than a rice-grain sized amount of children’s toothpaste. Children from 2–6 years of age should brush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, while kids older than 6 should use an age-appropriated toothpaste in the same amount.
The dream team: toothbrush and toothpaste kids actually like
Dear parents, we know. Brushing teeth isn't exactly high on the list of things children enjoy doing. But we offer products that can turn this rather tedious chore into an enjoyable, fun, and entertaining activity.
Try our children’s toothbrushes and toothpastes—they might just win your child over with their gentle feel and great taste.
First, the brush
It comes in bold colours and with super-soft bristles that literally caress the sensitive gums and tiny teeth but remove bacteria and plaque very efficiently. Thanks to the smart ergonomic handle, children automatically brush at a proper angle and with almost no pressure.
Second, the toothpaste
Our kids’ toothpaste are a hit with great flavours such as juicy strawberry, sweet watermelon, and mild mint. But they are also full of good stuff such as fluoride and natural enzymes that boost the natural power of saliva. It goes without saying that these toothpastes contain no SLS, microplastics, triclosan or other questionable ingredients.
