Electric toothbrushes are too harsh on gums and enamel
Rumour has it that electric toothbrushes lead to enamel wear or gum irritation. Do they? Let’s debunk the myth of hard and abrasive electric toothbrushes.
Electric toothbrushes are too harsh on gums and enamel
When used correctly, an electric toothbrush is very safe and effective at removing plaque from your teeth and along the gum line. It cleans properly but doesn’t hurt the gums or the enamel—thanks to incredibly gentle bristles and a no-pressure brushing policy. Did you know that our Hydrosonic toothbrushes stop when you apply too much pressure and therefore set a new standard in the gentle and effective oral selfcare? Yeah, that’s why our sonic toothbrushes do not need a pressure sensor as the gentle filaments take this responsibility —absolutely no risk of harm, then. To get the most of a sonic toothbrush, position the brush properly and brush by barely touching teeth and gums.
An electric toothbrush is also great for people with limited mobility and fun for kids to use. Thanks to sonic technology and the highest cleaning level, you can also clean the bulk of your interdental spaces—the spots where bacteria love to thrive as no manual toothbrush can reach them. A power toothbrush does a really good job, but if you combine it with interdental brushes, you get the real dream team for perfectly clean teeth.
How come?
The powerful brush head swirls around the mixture of saliva, water, and toothpaste in your mouth. These waves flush away plaque and bacteria from the surface of teeth, the gumline, in-between the gaps, and other hard-to-reach places in the mouth. This is called the hydrodynamic effect and works partially without direct contact. All our sonic toothbrushes clean with up to 84.000 cleaning movements per minute. You know, we are happy to provide a little extra power, even though only ca. 62.000 movements per minute are required for the hydrodynamic effect to appear. But even with the extra power—our toothbrush stays as gentle as a feather touch on your gums thanks to the extra soft brush heads.
Curaprox feeling
All three brush heads of our Hydrosonic electric toothbrushes come with extraordinary gentle and dense bristles or filaments. FYI: amazingly, it’s the same bristle material as our manual toothbrushes sport. So, they won’t hurt neither gums nor enamel but provide this unique soft Curaprox experience on teeth and gums that both you and your mouth love.
How to properly use an electric toothbrush?
An electric toothbrush promises an easy approach to your dental hygiene routine—of course, the brush does all the work. However, it’s not that easy. Despite all the technology, you still need a proper brushing routine.
An electric sonic or rotating toothbrush promises an easy approach to your dental hygiene routine—of course, the brush does all the work. However, this isn't quite the case. Despite all the technology, you still need a proper brushing routine. We’ll show you how.
Hydrodynamic effect
First of all: the intensity of a sonic toothbrush is very different from that of a classic manual toothbrush. It operates in the range of impressive 44.000 to 84.000 movements per minute. Thanks to the hydrodynamic processes which occur in your mouth—water, saliva, and toothpaste get mixed and swished around—, the Hydrosonic toothbrush manages to remove food residues and bacteria from your interdental spaces effectively. However, do a final check and clean-up with interdentals.
Brilliant brush head
The brush head is everything–and ours are the brilliant ones. Made in Switzerland, they combine Swiss precision with premium design for the ultimate in gentle yet effective cleaning. Each brilliant brush head features silky-soft filaments, longer on the outside and shorter on the inside, boosting plaque removal and gum care. The compact, round, tear-drop shape is unlike the stiff, elongated heads of other sonic toothbrushes, making every movement smooth and comfortable. Paired with the perfect angle and our Curacurve® bend, it reaches every tooth and hidden space for a deep clean. This isn’t just brushing–it’s a daily dental spa for complete oral health.
Curacurve® – smart bend
Did you notice the brush head’s bend of 10 (sensitive & power brush head) or 15 (single brush head) degrees? This smart kink provides easier access to hard-to-reach areas, such as the back of your front teeth and the molars but also the gumline and parts of the interdental spaces. Thanks to it, you can even reach behind the last tooth without gagging.
How to brush properly
1. Charge
Charge your electric toothbrush fully prior initial use. This ensures maximum battery life.
2. Apply toothpaste
Put a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on the brush head before you start brushing. Do not switch on the electric toothbrush before it is in your mouth.
3. Brush at the correct angle
Hold the electric toothbrush like a pen. Position the bristles at a 45-degree angle half on the gums, half on the tooth. Now move slowly and steady along the gumline, dedicating several seconds to each tooth. Clean the outer, inner, and the chewing or distal surfaces on both your upper and lower jaw. Angulating between the teeth at 90 degrees assures deeper cleaning of interdental spaces.
Which brushing level?
Depending on the model you have–pro, easy, or Black is white, your electric brush has 3 or 7 levels. The start level and the sensitive brush head are recommended for anyone using it for the first time until you get used to the vibrations. Then continue increasing to the next level to unlock the hydrodynamic power until you find the speed that suits you best. Be aware: use the single brush head only at start mode and with the indicated technique.
4. Clean
Switch off your electric toothbrush and rinse the brush head under running water. Store it in the bathroom cabinet or on to allow optimal dry and prevent mould build-up.
Which toothpaste works best with your electric toothbrush?
There is a huge selection of toothpastes available. But are some better suited to manual or electric toothbrushes? Let's take a look.
This question is very easy to answer: all Curaprox toothpastes can be used with an electric toothbrush. It’s up to you which Curaprox toothpaste suits your needs best—whether it's the zesty and vibrant Be you, the gentle yet effective Enzycal, or the innovative whitening power of Black is white. They all share a high performance with everyday use, also with an electric toothbrush.
All our toothpastes are powered by enzymes, free from SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), formulated with a low RDA, and contain no harsh or aggressive ingredients. Each formula is non-foaming, remineralising, and packed with valuable ingredients that support and enhance your oral health. That means: fewer mouth ulcers, no interference with taste, and a gentler, healthier clean. No matter which one you choose, you’re always getting gentle, Swiss-made, and dental-pro developed care and a perfect match for your extraordinary sonic toothbrush.
Watch out for SLS
What you should keep in mind when using an electric toothbrush: make sure that your preferred toothpaste does not contain SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). This nasty foaming agent that can lead to mouth dryness, ulcers, imbalances of your microbiome, and other unpleasant issues. And yes, of course, a lot of foam may create the feeling of a particularly thorough cleansing effect. But the opposite is true. The foam can reduce the hydrodynamic effect and contribute to dryness of the mouth, increasing the risk of dental decay.
